OSCAR WINNERS USE ITN ARCHIVE FOOTAGE

News Image
FOR the second year running, the winners of the Best Feature Length Documentary at the Oscars have used ITN Archive footage in their productions.
Last year ITN Archive footage was used in the Oscar-winning ‘One Day in September’ documentary about the Munich Olympics in 1972. This year’s winner was Deborah Openheimers’ ‘Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport’. Narrated by Dame Judi Dench, the documentary tells the poignant story of attempts to save Jewish children from Hitler's Germany and looked back at events through the eyes of children who survived.
Initially the production company approached ITN's Archive office in New York for just two seconds of footage, but ended up using 40 times that amount.
ITN Archive's Dominic Dare worked closely with the film's researcher Corinne Collett. He said: "It all happened because we have an office in New York. Corine ended up learning a lot more about the amazing depth of our early Reuters Newsreel collections because she could contact us in the same time zone."
The documentary used stock footage, photographs, letters and, most importantly, interviews with the survivors of the Kindertransport.
These footage used included interviews with the Kinder (German for children) involved, rescuers who had saved children, and people who had witnessed the events. (CD)
