ITN Archive supplies footage to Apartheid Museum
ITN Archive has been involved in a project to supply a wealth of footage to South Africa’s new Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg – the first major museum in the country dedicated to the apartheid era.
Over the last few months, ITN has been working with the museum and the highly-respected South African researcher Gail Behrman to bring together footage showing the defining moments in South Africa’s history.
The material is being used in displays throughout the museum to illustrate the years of racial segregation in South Africa. The footage draws on the rich library of film and TV footage held by ITN Archive, featuring material from the 1950s through to the collapse of Apartheid. The collection includes extremely rare exclusive ITN Archive footage of: the Sharpeville demonstration (1960), which shows footage of the demonstration itself, casualties and the mass funeral; the march to Pretoria of 1000 women in 1955; the Cator Manor demonstration in 1959 against the introduction of state beer halls; and Nelson Mandela’s interview with Brian Widlake in June 1961, shortly before his imprisonment on Robben Island.
Alwyn Lindsey, Sales Director of ITN Archive, said: “ITN Archive has recently been building its presence in South Africa, adding a major collection of South African footage earlier this year and opening a bureau in Johannesburg. We feel honoured that our footage will help to illustrate the significance of the major events from the Apartheid era to the museum’s visitors."
Gail Behrman said: “The ITN Archive, enhanced over the years with the additions of Reuters and Gaumont, provides an extraordinary visual resource illustrating South African history. Not only is the material a valuable addition to the Apartheid Museum, but the interest in the project and assistance of the ITN archive library sales team has been invaluable.”
