Keep Skills Up To Date With Workshops

News Image
The development of new technology coupled with industry changes and a lack of in house training, means that workshops are filling a crucial gap for anyone who wants to keep ahead of the game and ensure their skills are up to date.

As well as offering important training and updates, workshops are also an excellent way to meet fellow industry professionals and make all important contacts-crucial for any freelancer.

The GTC (Guild of Television Cameramen) runs workshops throughout the year, and open days which are always free to members and sometimes open to non-members for a fee.

Clive North who organises the workshops for the GTC said: "Tutoring at the sessions is by industry experts across a range of subject areas. The programme of workshops is designed to provide an ongoing way of keeping up with new kit, techniques, industry issues as well as fundamental theory and skills. These events are often hosted, funded or supported by the generosity of GTC sponsor companies, to whom the Guild is exceedingly grateful."

Award-winning Director of Photography Nick Dance recently ran a Drama Lighting workshop for the GTC, and believes they have a crucial part to play within the industry.

He said: "Workshops are important especially as the UK broadcasters do not have in house training schemes these days. Also I personally feel it's good to give back to the next generation by using my experience in the industry and providing support and encouragement. Workshops are also a very good way to meet other industry professionals and make contacts, which is vitally important for a freelancer. With technology moving fast it's good to keep up to date with the latest developments and ideas."

Nick started his career in documentaries, shooting in over sixty countries, from the deserts of the Sahara and Atacama to the pyramids and Great Wall of China, including flying with the Red Arrows to ocean diving on nuclear submarines. He made documentaries for BBC's QED strand about Falklands War hero Simon Weston; Monty Roberts, the horse whisperer; the Elephant Man and many others. He was part of the team that created the award winning and popular C4 series Time Team and went on to shoot many of the early episodes.

Nick's drama work includes many BAFTA and RTS award winning productions including: Bodies, Pompeii – The Last Day, Terry Pratchett's Johnny and the Bomb, Shameless, Nuremberg: Goering's Last Stand, Call The Midwife and Skins – for which he was personally nominated for BAFTA and RTS awards for Photography and Lighting, as well as a Guild of Television Cameramen (GTC) Award for Excellence. Other credits include: Death In Paradise, The Syndicate, The Interceptor and Our Girl, for which Nick received a second GTC Award for Excellence and period dramas: Mansfield Park, Mr. Selfridge and The Paradise.

Clive added: "The workshops are exceptionally well received by experienced, less experienced cameramen and students alike. Members regularly comment that just one workshop is worth the annual membership fee alone."

Feedback from previous workshops is always positive. Following a recent Camera Pedestal Workshops, one member said: "Through my membership of the GTC, the fantastic day organically fulfilled my childhood dream of pedestal camera operation within a leading studio, thank you again so much. As guests we were made to feel so welcome, to enjoy a genuinely hands-on, relaxed day with all involved chatting, listening and learning from each other."

Another participant added: "A really brilliant day where again I gained so much. Becoming a member of the Guild is helping me so much in ultimately preparing me for a career change into the industry. Along the way I'm making some really good friends too, who are all as passionate as I am about TV camerawork."

Forthcoming workshops are listed at the link below and booking details are also notified to GTC members and colleagues via email to allow plenty of time for diary planning.
