IBC2015: An Innovative And Immersive Experience Awaits

News Image
With more than 55,000 attendees from 170 countries around the world attending IBC last year, 2015 promises to be even bigger and better, with an array of new products and developments to be announced, as well as the highly-anticipated annual conference, featuring some of the leading industry innovators and policy makers.

The exhibition always presents new technology not previously previewed at NAB, but for others, it is the first opportunity to check out some of the big news from Vegas; for example, Blackmagic Design's URSA Mini and Evertz's MviP-II, an IP-based multi-viewer giving QC of the audio and video in IP transport streams.

Continuing with IP, a hot topic at the moment as more and more companies are making the switch, Exterity (14.H13), big on enterprise IPTV technologies for the distribution of live, on-demand and recorded video over IP, will highlight security and mobility at IBC2015. Its 'Beyond the LAN' set of products extend the reach of seamless distribution of live and premium TV content, so that consumers can view video on their preferred device wherever they are.

Exterity solutions leverage existing corporate networks to securely distribute terrestrial, satellite or cable, as well as internal channels over IP. Discussing the value of seamless integration with complementary technologies, CEO Colin Farquhar said: "Our systems scale to support large numbers of channels and multiple end user devices without compromising system performance, flexibility or network availability. Our solutions make any TV and video streams available over an organization's LAN, wireless network, WAN and Internet. Once on the network, channels can be displayed on TVs or directly onto desktop monitors and laptops. When multiple locations are involved, or when viewers are mobile, Exterity can also deliver the same TV and video content and experience to any compatible device."

Look for the AvediaStream transcoders as combined with the Exterity Origin Server, the built-in DRM from ArrisSecure Media, and the way Exterity embeds HDCPv2 technology to secure video distribution across an IP network from source to display.

Mobile broadcasting will also be demonstrated at the show, with Megahertz (11F20) showcasing a recently built one-man newsgathering vehicle involving its system design skills. One of a series of vans produced for a broadcaster, the unusual challenge here was the client's desire to use leased vans for its news fleet. This introduced the SI nightmare of drilling no holes, but means the equipment can move into a new vehicle when the lease expires.

Meanwhile, Genius Digital (14F33), a key presence in audience analytics, will concentrate on showing how operators can reduce churn – leading to optimising targeting and launching new profitable services; and, how sharing data insights from new tier-1 customers brings benefits. It will also share research results on the state of play of big data in the TV sector. The technology behind all this is the Genius Digital Insight Platform.

Immersive audio will also be a key aspect of the show. Jünger Audio (10A49) will unveil its hardware-based product that will allow broadcasters to check the quality of all immersive audio transmissions, regardless of format, and help maintain compliance with existing loudness regulations.

This year's Conference promises to deliver discussion and debate about a number of challenges facing the industry, with the theme: The Future of Media in an Age of Disruption. Key speakers over the five days will include Richard Welsh, CEO, Sundog Media Toolkit; Andrew Jordan, SVP Operations & Technology, NBCUniversal; and Michelle Munson, CEO and co-founder at Aspera, Inc.
