EBU And Nvidia Deepen Sovereign AI Standards Partnership

News Image
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Nvidia have expanded the sovereign AI standards partnership unveiled last year to support Europe's public service media.

The broadened effort brings in sovereign cloud providers, open model developers and systems integrators to help broadcasters deploy AI agents while keeping control of their data, infrastructure, models and security.

The EBU, a public service media alliance, has over 115 member organisations in more than 55 countries.

As AI agents enter newsrooms, production and audience services, the initiative is intended to reinforce editorial independence, data sovereignty and national resilience.

The expansion will define requirements and reference architectures that address where workloads run, how data is governed, which models power services, and how systems remain secure throughout their lifecycle.

Annsofi Eriksson, Chief Technology Officer, EBU, said: "These standards give EBU members a shared foundation to strengthen resilience, retain control, and deliver accountable advanced services that sustain audience trust".

Cloud providers will map the standards to sovereign deployment options. Microsoft will contribute expertise from Microsoft Sovereign Cloud, including Azure Local and Foundry Local, so broadcasters can process sensitive editorial material locally and keep critical services operating when external connectivity is unavailable.

Nebius will provide a platform enabling broadcasters to train, fine-tune and run their own models on European infrastructure.

Open models will give broadcasters visibility to inspect, evaluate and adapt AI to local languages, archives and editorial policies. Nvidia said its Nemotron open models provide a foundation that broadcasters can customise for domain-specific applications and public-service requirements.

Delphine Ernotte, CEO, France Télévisions, President, EBU, added: "Sovereign cloud infrastructure and open models can help Europe's public service media innovate while protecting data, editorial independence, and cultural diversity."
