BBC Three, BBC Scotland And Radio 4 Extra Linear Services To Close

News Image
The BBC has confirmed plans to close the linear broadcast services of BBC Three, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra in spring 2027, as the corporation seeks to address sustained financial pressures and deliver £500 million in savings by 2028.

The changes were announced to staff on Friday morning and form part of the BBC’s wider efforts to adapt its services to changing audience habits and move more content to digital platforms.

Although the linear channels will close, much of their programming will remain available through BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds, alongside other platforms.

BBC Scotland will continue as a channel on iPlayer, with content also available on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland. BBC Three commissions will be supported by increased investment in content for younger audiences, with programmes available on iPlayer and other platforms, including YouTube.

Meanwhile, programmes currently broadcast on Radio 4 Extra will move to BBC Sounds. The Daily Service will also be available on BBC Sounds and local radio.

BBC cites financial pressures behind closures
In a note to staff outlining the changes, BBC Director-General Matt Brittin said the corporation faced difficult decisions as it sought to manage costs and reshape its services.

"We need to make every pound work harder for audiences as we respond to the immediate cost pressures and reinvent the BBC for a changing world. We all know that means tough choices."

Brittin also addressed the decision to close the linear broadcast services, acknowledging the impact on audiences and staff while highlighting the continued availability of programming online.

"Much of the great content they currently carry will still be found where audiences already enjoy it on iPlayer and Sounds. While this follows media speculation, I recognise the confirmation of this news will be hard for audiences and colleagues."

The closures come as the BBC works towards its £500 million savings target by 2028, with the shift towards streaming and digital distribution forming part of its response to financial challenges and changing patterns of media consumption.
