Carmel Deploys Genetec Platform

Genetec Inc. (Genetec), a global leader in enterprise physical security software, has revealed that the City of Carmel, Indiana, has implemented the Genetec Security Center platform to bring together security and operational systems across more than 40 municipal locations, helping departments coordinate resources, speed up emergency response, and run daily services more efficiently.

Carmel's public safety teams now use Security Center to view video feeds, alarms, emergency calls, response vehicles, and IoT sensors via an interactive city map. First responders can access the same information on mobile devices, enabling better coordination and quicker action when incidents occur.

The unified view proved crucial when a rare tornado hit Carmel. Using Security Center, city teams rapidly mapped the storm’s trajectory and evaluated community-wide impact. They pinpointed the worst-affected areas and directed first responders, utility crews, and public works teams accordingly.

“By bringing all our departments onto one city-wide platform, we’ve reduced complexity. The result is better decisions for our community, higher response efficiency, and more cost-effective operations that benefit our residents,” said Morgan Rinehart, Network Architect at the City of Carmel.

Beyond public safety, the city is leveraging Security Center to enhance broader services. With data from multiple systems accessible through one platform, departments gain a clearer picture of city conditions and can deploy resources more effectively. For example:
- Engineering and street teams can monitor road conditions, coordinate snow clearance, and manage traffic around construction detours without dispatching staff to check conditions in person
- Parks teams can keep track of crowd levels, facility usage, and safety across the city’s water park and trails
- Public events teams can observe pedestrian flows in community plazas and during gatherings

The unified platform also provides Carmel’s IT department with a centralised view of system health. Teams can track device status, flag potential vulnerabilities, review cyber security information, and manage firmware and software updates from a single interface, supporting oversight of the city's expanding fleet of connected devices.

Carmel is adopting a hybrid model as well, using the cloud-based Security Center SaaS platform for added flexibility when temporary projects or large events call for expanded video coverage. The city can roll out mobile cameras and link with systems operated by local schools, sports organisations, and critical infrastructure partners.

Looking ahead, Carmel intends to grow the platform alongside its smart city initiatives by connecting additional systems and community partners. Built on an open platform, Security Center will allow the city to add new capabilities as needs evolve while maintaining a consistent approach to security and operations.
