Edith Cowan University Deploys Riedel Infrastructure
Riedel Communications has announced that Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth, Australia, has deployed an integrated communications and media infrastructure designed to bring professional live production workflows into its teaching environment.
The system connects production spaces across the university, including broadcast facilities and the theater, allowing communications, audio, video and recording resources to be shared throughout the building.
At the center of the installation are two Riedel Artist-1024 nodes, primarily supporting the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), a specialized academy within ECU, as well as the university’s broadcast department.
Stage managers and directors can also use Riedel Bolero wireless intercom to move between event areas while maintaining communication with production teams.
Riedel’s MediorNet platform provides the technical backbone for audio and video distribution. ECU operates five MicroN UHD units along with an additional mobile unit for signal transmission within the building and, when fiber connectivity is available, outside broadcast applications.
MediorNet HorizoN links traditional SDI and MediorNet infrastructures with ST 2110 workflows in the broadcast environment. The setup supports two independent broadcasts running in parallel and allows live productions from the theater auditorium to be integrated into the broadcast operation, including backstage communications, video and audio.
"Our partnership with Riedel has significantly transformed communications and coordination across our venues. Stage managers, front-of-house teams, technicians, backstage crews, and production staff are now able to work together through a single integrated communications platform, creating a more connected and professional operating environment. Importantly, it provides our students with the experience of industry-standard workflows and technologies that reflect contemporary professional practice," said Richard Reddrop, Associate Professor of Associate Dean (Production and Design), WAAPA.
ECU has also deployed three Riedel SimplyLive RiCapture servers as part of the installation. Two systems support 4K workflows, while a third is dedicated to teaching applications.
The SimplyLive systems allow students and instructors to record up to six video streams simultaneously, together with associated production communications. Recorded feeds and communications can then be replayed during training sessions, enabling students to review production workflows, retrace decisions and identify the causes of problems.
The system also allows instructors to record teaching sessions and make them available to students afterward as course materials, providing an additional resource for reviewing live production techniques and workflows.
By combining intercom, signal distribution and recording capabilities across its facilities, ECU is giving students access to an integrated production environment designed to mirror the technologies and operational practices used in professional live production.
