Riedel Brings Live Production Workflows Into ECU Classrooms

News Image
Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth, Australia, has implemented a communications and media infrastructure from Riedel Communications designed to give students hands-on experience with professional live production workflows.

The integrated system connects production spaces across the university, including broadcast facilities and the theater, allowing communications, audio, video and recording resources to be shared throughout the building.

At the centre of the installation are two Riedel Artist-1024 nodes, primarily used by the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), a specialist academy within ECU, as well as the university's broadcast department.

Riedel Bolero wireless intercom has also been deployed, allowing stage managers and directors to move between event areas while maintaining communication with production teams.

The university is using Riedel's MediorNet platform as the technical backbone for audio and video distribution. ECU operates five MicroN UHD units alongside a mobile unit capable of transmitting signals across the building and supporting outside broadcast applications when a fibre-optic connection is available.

MediorNet HorizoN provides connectivity between traditional SDI and MediorNet infrastructure and ST 2110 workflows within the broadcast environment. The setup allows two broadcasts to be produced independently at the same time, while productions from the theater auditorium can be integrated into the broadcast environment, including backstage communications and audio and video feeds.

ECU has also deployed three Riedel SimplyLive RiCapture servers, including two larger systems supporting 4K workflows and a dedicated unit for teaching.

The systems allow students and instructors to record up to six video streams simultaneously, together with associated production communications. Recorded material can then be replayed during training sessions, enabling students to review workflows, examine production decisions and identify where problems occurred.

The university can also record teaching sessions and make them available to students as part of their course materials.

The approach is intended to give students immediate practical feedback while exposing them to the processes and technologies used in professional live production environments.

Riedel's solutions for live production across media, sports and entertainment will be showcased at IBC2026 in Amsterdam from September 11-14. The company will exhibit at stands 10.A24, 10.A31 and 10.A38.
