Liberty Media purchases set-top box operator
Liberty Media has purchased Open TV, the company that powers SkyDigital's set-top boxes and interactive services.
Open TV, which is headed by James Ackerman, former chief of Sky's interactive TV business, Sky Active, controls access to 24 million set-top boxes around the world, including around 5.5 million in the UK through SkyDigital. Open TV also owns interactive television agency, Static, the company behind interactive channels Playjam and Yo-Yo.
Liberty Media is expected to pay £126 million in cash and shares for Open TV.
Rival interactive television software company, Liberate, recently sued Open TV in a patent dispute. Liberate controls the set-top boxes used by cable companies, NTL and Telewest, companies in which Liberty Media has stakes.
It is believed that John Malone is seeking to engineer a merger between NTL and Telewest, with Liberty taking a controlling stake.
