HK Audio Upgrades Audio System

HK Audio has completed a new sound system installation at Christ Church Kowloon Tong, helping to improve speech intelligibility in one of Hong Kong's historic places of worship while maintaining the building's architectural character.

Built in 1937, the Anglican church is known for its modern Gothic architecture, high ceilings and reflective interior surfaces, which create long reverberation times that make clear speech reproduction particularly challenging. The project also required a system that could blend discreetly into the church's historic surroundings.

The new installation was supplied and integrated by Tones Tailor, replacing an analogue sound system that had been in service for more than two decades. The upgrade marks the church's transition to a digital audio platform.

The system is centered on HK Audio's SI SERIES P10i and P10j column loudspeakers, selected for their controlled vertical dispersion, which helps minimize reflections from the church's walls and ceiling while providing consistent coverage throughout the space.

To support a wider range of applications, the installation also includes an SI SERIES S 210 subwoofer for music and live events, along with FINEO FO5 and FO8 loudspeakers for front-fill and monitoring. Together, the components provide a system capable of handling both spoken word and musical performances.

According to the companies involved in the project, careful attention was paid to both acoustic performance and aesthetics. The slim-profile column loudspeakers and flexible mounting options enabled the system to be integrated into the historic interior without detracting from the building's appearance.

Following installation and commissioning, the church reported a significant improvement in speech intelligibility and overall audio performance, with the finished system closely matching the results predicted during the acoustic design phase while remaining visually unobtrusive within the sanctuary.
