Camflag Showcases Automated Shading System

News Image
At the NAB Show 2026, Camflag demonstrated an automated shading system for broadcast lenses at the Canon booth, designed to reduce lens flares in real time, particularly during sports broadcasts with low sun angles. The manufacturer is addressing a common live production issue where low-angle sunlight enters the lens, visibly degrading contrast and image sharpness—a problem that primarily plagues classic outdoor box-lens setups.

Camflag's approach differs from traditional static shading. Instead of simple lens hoods or improvised solutions, the system uses a motorised, dynamic shading unit that is directly linked to the camera zoom. The so-called "flag" extends or retracts in sync with focal-length changes, preventing stray light from entering the lens in the first place.

The aim is to adapt the shading precisely to the respective camera position and movement without entering the frame or restricting operation. After a short calibration, the system works automatically and reacts to zoom movements in real time.

Technically, the solution is designed as an add-on module for broadcast lenses and is mounted above the lens. Control is based on the camera's zoom signal, allowing the system to be integrated into existing setups. According to Camflag, critical angle ranges that typically occur when the sun is low can be covered effectively. Key effects include a reduction in lens flares, higher image sharpness, improved contrast and richer colours.

At the same time, the system is designed for live environments, with quiet mechanics and plug-and-play integration.
