Point Source Audio Lavalier Mic Wins Praise From Theatre Designer

News Image
Veteran sound designer Poti Martin has credited the CO-8WL lavalier microphone from Point Source Audio as a key part of his musical theatre work, after using it in more than 2,500 productions across Europe.

Since adopting the microphone as his primary solution in 2020, Martin has relied on it to deliver consistent sound quality and reliability across a wide range of performances, from large-scale productions to touring shows.

With over 30 years of experience in theatre sound design, Martin emphasises the importance of keeping technology invisible to audiences. "In theatre, I hate seeing microphones," said Poti. "I like microphones to be totally hidden. I love when people leave the show asking where the microphones were placed because they couldn’t see them."

The demands of theatre present unique technical challenges, with performers constantly moving, changing costumes and performing in close proximity to audiences. Maintaining both audio clarity and visual authenticity is essential, influencing everything from microphone size to placement techniques.

The CO-8WL's compact capsule design has enabled Martin and his team to conceal microphones effectively, often customising placement for each performer and even matching cable colours to hair and costumes to preserve the illusion on stage.

Alongside its discreet form factor, sound quality has been a decisive factor. Martin conducted detailed comparisons with other professional lavaliers before selecting the CO-8WL, citing its balanced tonal response for both dialogue and singing.

“They sound exactly the same as some of the best microphones on the market,” he recalls. “It’s incredible how equal they sound.”

Durability has also proven critical for demanding touring environments. The microphone’s water-resistant design and robust construction have reduced issues related to sweat, movement and frequent costume changes, helping maintain performance consistency.

Martin has specified the CO-8WL for numerous productions across Europe, including performances of Mamma Mia!, We Will Rock You, Cabaret, Cinderella and Anastasia. Across thousands of shows, he says the combination of sound quality, discreet design and reliability has made it a core component of his audio system.

Reflecting on his continued use of the microphone, Martin states: "They sound amazing, they are discreet, and they are reliable."
