dB Broadcast completes TV studio for Ealing Institute of Media

dB Broadcast, the leading UK system integrator, has completed a 130 square metre TV studio, with adjacent control room suite and separate vision control, sound control and apparatus rooms, for Ealing Institute of Media (EIM), part of Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College.
EIM, which has been awarded a Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in broadcast media and animation by the Learning and Skills Council, has signed a special partnership agreement with the BBC. As part of that agreement, EIM will pilot a new Media Diploma, which has been developed by Skillset (the sector skills council for the audio visual industries) and the BBC. Skillset has also awarded EIM Screen Academy status, the only further education institution in the UK to achieve this.
dB Broadcast was responsible for the supply of all equipment, detailed design, pre-fabrication and installation work. Equipment supplied included three Sony DXC-D50 triax cameras, Vinten tripods, Autocue prompter system, Ross SDI vision mixer, DVCam video recorders, Leitch router, Trilogy talkback system, and on-air and cue lights, to create the right atmosphere. There is also a 135 square metre media rehearsal area, with three cameras, and a 20 square metre room. The room can be configured as an external source to the main studio so as to teach the methods of two-way working.
The new studio will be used to teach TV operations and production courses and help students gain the practical skills that up until now had to be learned on the job. With qualifications based around employer needs, EIM believes that it can plug the current skills gap and provide a competitive workforce.
Tom Swan, dB's Sales and Marketing director, said: "We were particularly delighted to undertake this project because of our own strong links to training and education, having set up our own in-house apprentice programme for technicians and wiremen in 1999."
