MotionFX develops combined digitial production and post-production operation

Following a successful Hollywood screening of 'Silence Becomes You', (SBY) MotionFX, has been hailed as one of the world's leading digital cinematography and digital intermediate (DI) combined production and post-production operations.
During the post-production of SBY the world's first 100% Digital Cinematography feature film captured RGB 4:4:4 2.37:1, fully uncompressed to data throughout production and post-production, MotionFX were simultaneously providing the vfx shots for Roman Polanski's film 'Oliver Twist'.

"To have been able to provide all the necessary creative and technological support for a full digital film such as SBY has been a dream within the industry for some time. To have done this while providing vfx shots for a high-end 35mm celluloid captured film such as Oliver Twist has proven what a dedicated boutique such as MotionFX can do. And this follows on from the recent DI performed by MotionFX on the 35mm Wesley Snipe's feature 'Chaos' earlier in the year."
Operations Director for MotionFX, John O'Quigley, described their ability to provide a combination of production and post-production equipment, experience, and highly qualified operators and support staff, as being unique within the industry. "With Silence Becomes You we were able to provide all digital cinematography camera equipment, support staff, and train and guide the DoP, camera operators, grips, lighting crew, etc, as to the differing needs of digital cinematography.
"We were also able to provide all on-line image post-production requirements for the movie, from on-line conforming, digital intermediate grading, vfx, text, graphics, and deliverables."
According to independent consultant, Steve Shaw from Digital Praxis, who provided the creative and technology support for SBY, MotionFX are the first of a new breed of companies embracing digital technology throughout the production and post-production movie making creative processes.
"With the success of their screening in Hollywood at the ETC theatre, MotionFX have proven their data centric creative and business workflow as being more than competitive to any other available," said Shaw.
"The Hollywood screening, sponsored by Thomson, makers of the Viper digital cinematography camera used on SBY, was made to a select audience from within the industry, including DoPs, Producers, and Directors. The response has been nothing less than amazing.
"From beginning to end this film has been held within the data domain, and it was only at the final stage - for digital projection - that a 'video' version was generated via a Sony SR vtr. The result demonstrates what can be easily achieved via such a workflow, and was beyond even the best 35mm can deliver under optimal circumstances. And this from a movie with a sub $5 milion budget, and some large leading names in the cast."
"I would rate what MotionFX have achieved as nothing short of fantastic," concluded Shaw.
A UK digital screening of 'Silence Becomes You' will take place in late October.
Equipment at MotionFX includes three Viper Digital Cinematography cameras, two Quantel iQ Digital Intermediate systems with film calibrated digital projection screening and grading room, Digital Fusion 2D vfx systems, Maya 3D animation and effects systems.
