SMPTE Expands African Presence

SMPTE is expanding its engagement with Africa's media technology sector through a series of industry events in South Africa this October, including its first Young Innovators event outside the United Kingdom and an artificial intelligence-focused session at Durban FilmMart.

The initiative aims to strengthen connections with local film, television and broadcast professionals while creating opportunities for students and emerging talent to engage with SMPTE’s global network, educational resources and industry standards.

On Thursday, October 15, SMPTE will host a Young Innovators panel and networking mixer at the Tshimologong Precinct in Johannesburg as part of the Fak’ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival.

The panel, titled Career Pathways in Film, Television & Broadcast in the AI Era, will feature students working to establish a SMPTE Student Chapter in South Africa. Discussions will focus on emerging career opportunities, the impact of AI on media technology and the skills and professional connections needed to succeed in an evolving industry.

SMPTE's programme also includes an AI white paper brainstorming session at Durban FilmMart on Monday, October 12. The session will bring together industry participants to discuss emerging technologies and their potential implications for media production.

During the Fak'ugesi Festival, SMPTE will share an exhibition stand with Magic Lightbox, giving attendees the opportunity to learn about the organisation’s technical standards, educational resources, membership options and international professional community.

The events represent a further step in SMPTE’s efforts to build relationships with South Africa’s media and entertainment community, while encouraging greater participation in its global programmes and supporting the development of local industry talent.
