Dan Johnson Enhances Dialogue Precision with NUGEN Audio
Renowned for creating clean, emotionally resonant mixes for major broadcasters and streaming giants, Dan Johnson of The Post Republic London has spent over twenty years refining the art of dialogue-centric sound design. To maintain his high standards for vocal balance and consistency, the BAFTA-winning mixer integrates NUGEN Audio's professional suite—including VisLM, ISL, and Halo Upmix—into his daily workflow. Most recently, Johnson has adopted NUGEN's DialogCheck, a specialized tool that provides objective measurements of speech intelligibility, ensuring that the core of the story remains audible regardless of complex music or effects.
Johnson's path to post-production began with his love of music and sound. After earning a degree in Music and Sound Recording from the University of Surrey, he discovered the world of post-production audio while working his way up from runner to re-recording mixer at London studios such as Videosonics and Molinare. Today, a BAFTA and RTS Award-winner, as well as an Emmy and Golden Reel nominee, he specializes in both dialogue editing and mixing for film, broadcast and streaming at The Post Republic, with credits that include content for Netflix, Amazon, the BBC and StudioCanal.
"I'd like to think I'm known for the quality of my mixes," shares Johnson. "I'm slightly more dialogue-focused, maybe because I do dialogue editing as well. Once you get that right, the tasks of mixing, effects and music become much more straightforward. Dialogue is the solid base of every mix." That commitment to clarity made Johnson an ideal early tester of NUGEN Audio DialogCheck, a plug-in designed to measure the intelligibility of speech within a mix. Introduced to the tool through a colleague, Johnson worked directly with NUGEN's development team to provide feedback during its beta phase.
"It was good for me because it made me think about dialogue clarity in quite a philosophical way," he explains. " 'What is it? How can you measure it? How much is subjective and how much can be reduced to a number?' I went back and measured quite a few of my past mixes, compared the data with my notes and thought about how DialogCheck could fit into a real-world workflow."
DialogCheck has since been integrated into Johnson's daily sessions, as he found the plug-in particularly useful for providing objective feedback when human perception can waver after weeks in the studio. "It's a handy way of knowing whether you've gone too far in burying the dialogue or whether it's still audible," he says. "You like to think you're consistent, but everyone has biases. DialogCheck gives you something objective and consistent to refer to when you're unsure."
Beyond analysis, Johnson believes the plug-in serves as a valuable communication tool in collaborative environments. "Sometimes, during mixing, you're pushed to bring up the music or effects," he explains. "DialogCheck can help you have that conversation with a director or producer. It provides an objective assessment of dialogue clarity, so you're not just relying on an opinion. It helps protect the dialogue, which is so important to the audience experience."
Alongside DialogCheck, Johnson regularly relies on NUGEN's VisLM loudness meter, calling it a "mainstay" across all his sessions. "VisLM is in every mix I do," he says. "It gives me instant, trustworthy feedback on whether I'm hitting broadcast or streaming specs. It's fast, reliable and respected throughout the industry."
He also lists ISL, the brand's True Peak limiter, and Halo Upmix among his go-to plug-ins. "We often have to deliver in surround formats like 5.1 or Dolby Atmos, but the music is usually provided in stereo," explains Johnson. "Halo Upmix is particularly good at creating surround envelopment while keeping the original stereo integrity intact. The 'exact' function ensures that when you fold back down, it sounds exactly the same as the original mix. That compatibility is a strong feature, and it's quick to get the results you want."
For Johnson, NUGEN Audio plug-ins have become integral to a more thoughtful, consistent approach to mixing. "Anything that helps us listen as if we're hearing it for the first time, like an audience would, is a positive thing," he adds. "NUGEN's solutions, such as DialogCheck, encourage that kind of awareness, which can only make the work better."
