Sony And TCL Agree MoU

Sony Corporation and TCL Electronics Holdings Limited have agreed to advance discussions on a strategic partnership in home entertainment, signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to that effect on 20 January 2026.

The MoU outlines plans to establish a joint venture that would assume Sony’s home entertainment business. TCL would hold 51% of the new entity, with Sony owning 49%. Operating globally, the venture would oversee the full value chain—from product development and design to manufacturing, sales, logistics and customer service—for televisions and home audio equipment. The companies aim to execute definitive binding agreements by the end of March 2026. Subject to execution of those agreements, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, operations are targeted to commence in April 2027.

The proposed company would combine Sony’s picture and audio technologies, brand strength and operational expertise (including supply chain management) with TCL’s advanced display technology, global scale, industrial footprint, end‑to‑end cost efficiency and vertically integrated supply chain. Its products are expected to carry the globally recognised Sony and BRAVIA names, with the ambition of creating new customer value across TVs and home audio.

Both firms cite a growing global market for large-screen TVs, driven by diversified viewing via OTT (over the top) and video‑sharing platforms, enhanced smart features, and the shift to higher resolution and larger displays. In this environment, the new company aims to deliver innovative products and pursue further growth through operational excellence, with Sony and TCL committing strong support for its sustainable development.

Kimio Maki, Representative Director, President and CEO, Sony Corporation, said: "We are pleased to have reached this agreement with TCL for a strategic partnership. By combining both companies' expertise, we aim to create new customer value in the home entertainment field, delivering even more captivating audio and visual experiences to customers worldwide."

DU Juan, Chairperson, TCL Electronics Holdings Limited, said: "We believe that this strategic partnership with Sony represents a unique opportunity to combine the strengths of Sony and TCL, creating a powerful platform for sustainable growth. Through strategic business complementarity, technology and know-how sharing, and operational integration, we expect to elevate our brand value, achieve greater scale, and optimize the supply chain in order to deliver superior products and services to our customers."
