New Immersive Studio For Queen's University Belfast

News Image
A new immersive sound facility has been installed at the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queen's University Belfast.

Supplied and installed by HHB, the facility features an Avid S6 M10 with MTRX, Dolby Atmos HE-RMU and Genelec 8040 + 1032 Sub monitoring set up.

The Avid Pro Tools S6 control surface, combined with Pro Tools | HD 12.8, offers comprehensive Dolby Atmos integration. However, as some students work with several other DAWs, the additional ability to be able to control any EUCON enabled DAW made the S6 key to futureproofing the studio and accommodating undergraduates on the various courses at the university.

Day to day, the studios are used for a variety of applications including the recording of pop and classical music, electronic music production, sound design, mixing for radio and television broadcast and post production for picture.

Alongside the new immersive sound studio is the Sonic Lab, a multi-functional concert hall/research laboratory allowing playback of 3D and binaural audio across 48 loudspeakers. The addition of the Dolby Atmos Mastering Suite with Dolby HE-RMU extends the functionality of the lab to provide a second place for students to render mixes in Dolby Atmos. It will also be possible to present Dolby Atmos content to an audience of up to 150 people.

Andrew Hingley, HHB's Educational Sales Manager, advised and worked with Craig Jackson, Technical Manager at the Sonic Arts Research Centre, to update the facility.

Craig said: "We have made numerous equipment purchases from HHB in the past and we have always been very impressed with the technical advice and support provided. HHB have also ben very good at arranging demos of equipment prior to purchase which has been extremely helpful in making informed purchase decisions."
