Power Savings: The Benefits Of Power Over Coax

News Image
No matter what the subject, budget or timeline and regardless of the degree of planning and preparation, power supply and maximising the uptime during which equipment is available for filming, remains one of the most pressing challenges when working outside of the studio environment.

Where the timing of the event being filmed is uncertain and a second take isn't an option; for example the critical moment in a nature documentary or consumer affairs show, then this pressure can multiply exponentially.

Fortunately help is at hand in the form of Power-over-Coax Injector/Stripper modules from LEN Limited.

These UK designed and manufactured modules, significantly increase the DC power that can be delivered over the coax cable, enabling a single coax cable to provide DC power to the camera (4A max), whilst also providing a broadcast quality HD or 3G SDI feed to production, making them the ideal alternative to frequent, time consuming and disruptive camera battery changes.

In response to market demand LEN have developed a miniaturised Power-over-Coax Injector/Stripper module that can be used in covert filming operations when changing camera batteries is not possible.

These are now in use when filming the television series 'Rogue Traders' to ensure that the subject of the investigation is not alerted to the filming position by the need to change batteries.

All these modules are passive, meaning that 100% of your power goes to running the camera, minimising drain on batteries or demand on generators, so that power usage is reduced and what power is used is delivered to the camera, rather than lost feeding the power supply's own requirements.

An approach that is not only good for the environment, but also for your operational efficiency and production budget.

All LEN products undergo thorough testing within LEN's own in-house test facility as part of a rigorous quality control process.

Coupled with innovative design and high quality engineering, this has led to their use by a wide variety of productions including a starring role in a prime time BBC consumer affairs series and major international sporting events.

As a trusted provider, to directors and broadcasters across the globe, LEN's equipment is widely specified and trusted for use within the most challenging and hostile broadcast environments.

For example, LEN's range of Passive Ground Isolators provide directors with a reliable, proven solution for interference free access to high quality video in SD, HD or 3G SDI, even where the crew or outside broadcast vehicle may be located remotely from the subject being filmed.
