Lipsync Post complete title sequences for 'Canterbury Tales'

The Graphics department of Soho’s Lipsync Post has created the title sequences for one of the most prominent television events of the year, the modern retelling of Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales,’ as six single dramas for BBC1.
Working with series producer Kate Bartlett, the challenge for Lipsync’s graphic animators was unique. It was essential that, while the title sequence establishes a contemporary setting for the tales, it would also set the scene for individual storytellers at the relevant point on their pilgrimage from Southwark to Canterbury.
The concept for the title sequences was developed by Lipsync Post’s Head of Graphics Howard Watkins, who was also responsible for individual graphics and animation on 'The Man-Of-Law’s Tale' and 'The Wife Of Bath'.
Lipsync’s Julia Blake and Gareth Tansey also contributed significantly to the project.
All compositing and animation for the title sequences was produced in After Effects using extensive 3D effects.
“The Canterbury Tales project was particularly challenging,” concedes Watkins. “The titles needed to leave audiences in no doubt that the setting for the tales is in the present day while presenting each tale in its own idiosyncratic style, location and colour.
“In the main title sequence, the first image we see is the motorway and a road sign to Canterbury. Using cut-out images of the rolling Kentish hills, the landscape is pieced together and interwoven with the key characters from each tale with a resulting collage that depicts them all.
The style, although contemporary, hints at medieval iconography.
