First Commercial Deployment Of Video IP Solution Announced

BigBand Networks and LG Powercom have announced the commercial deployment of BigBand's video IP solution, vIP PASS, to deliver cost effective IPTV services to personal computers and IP set-top boxes over DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems.
LG Powercom is a telecommunications service provider and has the largest HFC Networks infrastructure in Korea with over 2.3 million subscribers and offers IPTV and high-speed Internet data services via optical cable and HFC infrastructure. They have built more than 60,000m of HFC networks nationwide in Korea.
LG Powercom reviewed various alternatives to support their IPTV strategy including deploying video IP across their existing CMTS's that carry voice and data. BigBand was chosen because vIP PASS provided a field proven platform-based IPTV solution for cost effective, commercial deployment of video IP services and a path from today's broadcast to tomorrow's unicast service delivery.
Inho Suh, Head of Technology of LG Powercom, said: "BigBand's video IP solution met our critical time-to-market requirements and leveraged our nationwide HFC network in Korea. The BigBand IPTV approach gives us the flexibility and scalability to meet customers' demands for more personalised video services with high-quality."
In deploying vIP PASS, LG Powercom is now positioned to be an early market leader in meeting the growing demand for quality video IP delivery to a broader range of consumer devices to generate additional revenue streams, provide more personalised content, and compete with popular online service providers.
The BigBand platform-based IPTV solution capitalised on LG Powercom's existing network architecture to deliver video services via DOCSIS 3.0 compatible modems without transiting a CMTS. vIP PASS was deployed within 90 days and includes BigBand's field validated video control plane technology, modular universal edge QAM platforms and video management and performance software.
David W. Heard, Chief Operating Officer at BigBand, said: "The LG Powercome win attests to our commitment to provide innovative technology solutions, enabled by our proven digital networking platforms, coupled with attractive economics.
"vIP PASS opens new market opportunities and diversifies our solution portfolio to enable efficient video IP delivery. vIP PASS supports our customers' needs to deliver quality video to more devices, tap new revenue opportunities, and be more competitive with a solution that could save them hundreds of millions of dollars in capital expenditures, while providing an evolution path to more personalised, unicast services."
