The Chimney Pot Sweden makes the grade with Nucoda Film Master from Digital Vision
Digital Vision, a leading developer of advanced digital media applications specialising in film and video solutions, has announced that The Chimney Pot, a pioneering post facility based in Stockholm, Sweden, has used Nucoda Film Master to digitally grade Queen of Pop, Madonna’s disco-inspired ‘Hung Up’ and Robbie Williams’ surreal ‘Trippin’ videos.
For both videos, Edward Negussie, The Chimney Pot colourist, worked alongside famous Swedish Director Johan Renck, who has a number of high profile music credits to his name including The Streets’ ‘Dry Your Eyes’, Madonna’s ‘Nothing Really Matters’ and The Libertines’ ‘What Ever Happened to the Likely Lads’.
Negussie explained: “Working with the Nucoda Film Master timeline the client can focus on the whole picture rather than focusing on details, which might later change in the online edit. Nucoda Film Master allowed me to key in a way that wasn’t possible on the telecine. The toolset is also much wider, which makes the job of grading a far more creative and flexible process. Throughout the process of grading both ‘Hung Up’ and ‘Trippin’ I was able to send the graded material to the online and the editor prepared it with graphics and creative add-ons. He then sent it back to me and I added different types of looks. Previously, I would have had to have gone back to the negative and carried out a tape-to-tape grading on the telecine.”
Using a DI workflow directors and cinematographers can grade interactively changing the edit, effects and the grade at any point, “The great thing about doing these kinds of projects in DI is that we are no longer working in linear. If this was done on a telecine we would have had to have completed a film-to-video transfer on DigiBeta, which would have meant the material would have been really difficult to key. This gave us a much more flexible way of working,” concluded Negussie.
Simon Cuff, VP Nucoda Business Unit added: “We are delighted that The Chimney Pot chose Nucoda Film Master for these highly artistic projects. More and more facilities are turning to a DI data-centric workflow to answer all of their creative needs.”
