IBC 2026: Appear Backs Hybrid Live Production

Appear used IBC 2026 to argue that live production is converging on a hybrid model that blends deterministic hardware with flexible software, unveiling a raft of updates across its X, VX, Hub and XM product lines to support one operational approach for both.

On the hardware side, the X Platform expanded to cover more of the signal chain with higher density and tighter security. The compact X5 now supports encode and decode for AVC, HEVC and JPEG‑XS, adds a full audio stack with native Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos (JOC), includes IP redundancy and genlock, and fits two half‑rack units in 1RU. JPEG‑XS is positioned as the headline addition for ultra‑low‑latency contribution in flypacks, remote commentary and field work, not just central facilities. A new SIx300 module introduces LUT‑based HDR/SDR colour conversion directly within the X Platform on both SDI and ST 2110, removing the need for a separate colour stage.

Security was a parallel focus. Appear demonstrated a live ST 2110 Trust Boundary aligned to SMPTE RP2129, providing a hardware‑enforced media firewall at the network edge designed for high‑bitrate media flows that can challenge general‑purpose IT firewalls. The company said the question of content assurance was among the most prominent concerns on the show floor, and it contends that a media‑specific, hardware trust boundary is a more durable answer than repurposed enterprise IT tools.

VX continued its shift from a transport gateway to a broader processing platform. A key addition is Import from X, which automatically discovers and imports SRT output configurations from connected X5, X10 and X20 units without manual IP setup or re‑cabling. That bridge is intended to make ground‑to‑cloud and hybrid REMI workflows practical using existing X‑series deployments.

VX now deploys across AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and private cloud, and it natively ingests and delivers SRT, NDI, RTMP, WebRTC and RTP (including ST 2022‑7). Demonstrations on the stand spanned AWS, Oracle Cloud and Alibaba Cloud. From a single VX ingest, operators can simultaneously feed social platforms via RTMP, production systems over NDI and distribution partners using SRT, turning new destinations into workflow steps rather than bespoke integrations. VX also adds native software decode for AVC and HEVC after SPTS demux with a sub‑100 ms target decode latency, removing the need for dedicated hardware for decode in server or cloud environments. Resilience features including seamless ST 2022‑7 protection switching and A/B failover now run as VX workflow steps on standard compute.

Interoperability was shown with a live VX MXL Out demo, exchanging media between VX instances via shared memory instead of the network, aligning to the EBU’s Dynamic Media Facility principles and the open‑source Media eXchange Layer project. VX further targets enterprise, telco and regulated deployments with single sign‑on via Azure AD and Okta, integrated secrets and PKI management, and built‑in Grafana dashboards.

Appear positioned Hub and XM as the operational layer for scaling estates. Hub’s new Universal Search spans documentation, releases, release notes and the knowledge base behind a permission‑aware bar, while customer‑specific software access replaces ad‑hoc email or sFTP handovers with an auditable download experience. In XM v1.1.0, XM Profiles allow teams to capture a proven configuration from any chassis, store it centrally as a single source of truth and push it across multiple chassis, standardising deployment. XM extends centralised security and governance to firewall rules, media trust boundaries and data‑flow monitoring across sites.

Across the wider show, Appear noted that interoperability moved from differentiator to expectation. The Media eXchange Layer drew broad vendor demonstrations and was recognised as a finalist in the IBC Innovation Awards (Content Creation category), signalling rapid maturation from active development to deployable technology. Appear said this momentum was a key reason it chose to demonstrate VX MXL Out live rather than wait for complete standardisation, arguing that open, multi‑vendor software interoperability benefits both the market and customers.

Security and timing emerged as recurrent themes. Content assurance was treated as an operational priority rather than a compliance box‑tick, which Appear addressed with its ST 2110 Trust Boundary work and VX’s enterprise security features. Timing and synchronisation—vital yet often overlooked—also drew attention. The IBC 2026 Technical Papers programme featured a contribution from the UK’s National Physical Laboratory titled Assured timing for broadcast: the invisible utility, underscoring the dependence of IP media systems on a shared PTP clock under SMPTE ST 2059. With most clocks anchored to GNSS, jamming and spoofing risks are increasingly material. Multiple exhibitors showed hybrid SDI/IP sync generators engineered to ride through GNSS outages on local oscillator holdover, highlighting an active product area rather than a solved problem.

According to Appear, software‑defined production compounds the timing challenge. A single, on‑premises PTP domain is comparatively straightforward; workflows distributed across cloud regions, containers and 5G contribution links introduce path asymmetry and jitter that undercut PTP precision. In such architectures, microservices must treat timing discipline as a first‑class design concern—indexing media to the PTP epoch—rather than assuming it away.
