SipRadius Honoured With Technology & Engineering Emmy Award

SipRadius has been honoured with a Technology & Engineering Emmy® Award for its work on web-based frame-accurate remote monitoring systems for distributed broadcast production.

The award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) is being shared by SipRadius, NBCU, Grass Valley, CBS Sports, Disney, Game Creek, Amazon and Vindral, recognising their contributions to the development and implementation of the technology.

The project was designed to connect major broadcast centres and live content in Los Angeles, New York and London with production teams working from remote locations.

The aim was to provide remote teams with the same access to content flows as they would have if they were located alongside the server room, while taking advantage of the low-cost and widely available connectivity offered by the public internet.

The system also had to maintain image quality while providing a high level of protection against copyright infringement and piracy. SipRadius said this required an adaptable solution capable of supporting different applications and users.

To meet those requirements, the company used a combination of DRM-enabled WebRTC and the RIST transport layer to provide security, resilience and scalability.

The original deployment used web browsers and set-top boxes built around a Raspberry Pi processor, together with a VLC client running software based on the libRIST open-source library, which is maintained by SipRadius.

The system was designed to provide security across both WebRTC and RIST paths, as well as end-to-end DRM protection, while meeting cybersecurity audit requirements.

SipRadius said this was achieved using CoralOS, its customised Linux operating system developed specifically for media applications.

"The fundamental concept of the project was simple: to be able to share content between creators, producers and executives, wherever they are, with the minimum latency, to achieve realtime remote production," said Sergio Ammirata Ph.D., SipRadius founder and Chief Scientist. "We demonstrated that using open RIST transport and COTS hardware, combined with a custom OS and very carefully tuned application software, it is practical to connect users to content regardless of their geographical location. In the process, we also created a paradigm shift by having every resource available to everyone everywhere.

"This is not a science project: it carries hundreds of hours of content every single day, material which the broadcaster relies upon for its very existence. Implementations like this demonstrate that IP connectivity is transformative for media creativity. The SipRadius team will receive the Emmy Award at a joint ceremony in Los Angeles on 14 October, hosted by the Television Academy and NATAS.
