NAGRAVISION And MediaTek Expand Partnership
NAGRAVISION, a Kudelski Group company, has widened its collaboration with MediaTek Inc. to harden content security on connected televisions.
Building on the next-generation DRM solution the companies introduced last year, the agreement enables pay-TV and streaming operators to deliver their services directly to retail-purchased TVs, lowering per-household costs without sacrificing protection for premium content.
As smart TVs increasingly serve as the primary device for high-value streaming, including live sport, securing the device itself has become critical to maintaining trust across the distribution chain. A defence-in-depth approach is designed to reduce the risk of key extraction, accelerate disruption of piracy, limit unauthorised redistribution, and safeguard user experiences, content rights value and operator revenues over time.
Under the deal, the NAGRAVISION secure element will be incorporated into all forthcoming MediaTek TV system-on-chips (SoCs), providing a global footprint across television manufacturers and meeting a long-standing need: broadcast-grade security for OTT delivered in hardware rather than relying on more vulnerable software alone. The same technology also supports traditional broadcast services on TVs, at a premium protection level previously confined to hardware-secured set-top boxes.
"This agreement firmly places security in the silicon rather than it being added around it," said Sam Lee, General Manager, Smart Home BU at MediaTek. "By embedding the NAGRAVISION secure element across our TV SoC portfolio, we're giving television manufacturers and service providers a consistent, hardware-anchored foundation for premium content, wherever in the world those devices ship."
The initiative also targets emerging attack vectors linked to AI and potential future quantum capabilities. Its hardware-anchored architecture is designed to protect service-critical assets against advanced threats.
