Audio-Technica Launches New BP880R Contact Microphone

Audio-Technica has announced the launch of its new BP880R Contact Microphone, designed to capture impact and surface vibrations while minimising interference from surrounding noise.

The new microphone is aimed at broadcasters and audio professionals covering sports events, theatre performances and other live productions where capturing the physical impact of an event can help create a more immersive experience for audiences.

Because the BP880R detects impact and vibration rather than airborne sound, it has very low sensitivity to ambient noise. Audio-Technica said this makes it particularly suited to sports including skating, skiing and swimming, where broadcasters can use it to bring viewers closer to the action.

The microphone is housed in a low-profile, dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass body, with a corrosion-resistant coating designed to protect it from chlorinated water. It also features a waterproof cable and is built to withstand demanding conditions.

The BP880R can be submerged in water or ice, buried underground or installed in flooring, with waterproof performance rated to IPX7 standards.

It offers several mounting options, including four through holes for bolts, nuts or zip ties, as well as a 1/4-inch threaded hole for mounting with a single screw.

Powered by phantom power, the BP880R features a high-sensitivity piezoelectric sensor and internal preamplifier, allowing it to transmit clear signals over long cable runs.

Its fixed 20-metre cable has a low-impedance output and can be extended using balanced cables where longer runs are required.

Audio-Technica said the BP880R is designed to provide broadcasters with greater flexibility when capturing the sounds and physical sensations associated with live events.

The Audio-Technica BP880R will be available in Europe from October 2026.
