LiveU Supports Actua Sport's Multi-Venue Host Broadcast Operation

LiveU's LU900Q intelligent production unit played a key role in Actua Sport’s host broadcast operation for the Games in Glasgow, which took place from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

Actua Sport deployed 14 LiveU units across multiple venues, covering 10 sports and six Para sports during the event, which brought together approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories. LiveU Matrix was also deployed in the cloud to provide cost-efficient IP distribution to broadcasters around the world.

Producing a major multi-venue sporting event across a city presents significant connectivity challenges, particularly as crews move between competition venues and side events. Network conditions can vary considerably, from stable connections to heavily congested public networks during peak periods.

Actua built its contribution workflow around the LU900Q, combining native LiveU IQ (LIQ), advanced 5G connectivity and dual-MIMO antennas to provide resilient broadcast-grade contribution across the different locations.

LiveU IQ enables the LU900Q to dynamically switch eSIMs between mobile network operators, selecting cellular connections based on conditions at a particular location and time. This allowed Actua’s crews to maintain contribution as network conditions changed across four venues and 10 days of competition.

The LU900Q enabled ENG crews to move between stadiums and social event locations, contributing live and near-live coverage including press conferences, athlete arrivals, warmups and side events to Actua’s broadcast operations centre.

The mobile workflow also allowed crews to capture locations and angles that would not have been accessible through fixed infrastructure. Actua deployed multi-camera LU800 units across Glasgow venues as an additional backup layer, while two further LU800 units provided 24/7 beauty shots from remote locations directly to rights holders.

"What makes an event like this genuinely difficult is that you are operating across multiple venues, with network conditions that can vary significantly, under conditions that change by the hour," said Franck Choquard, Director of Actua Sport. "The LU900Q gave our crews the confidence to go live from anywhere, whether in the venues, backstage or elsewhere in the city. LiveU IQ meant that even in the most congested environments, we were not compromising on the video performance. We also knew LiveU's setup would let us scale easily during the games to capture the best content and share it with the participating rights holders."

The LiveU deployment formed part of Actua’s wider approach to delivering the host broadcast without relying on a traditional temporary international broadcast centre (IBC). The operation combined permanent broadcast infrastructure with flexible field contribution and cloud-based distribution.

Actua’s Broadcast Operations Center in Glasgow was located within BBC Scotland’s permanent broadcast facility and connected to the company’s facility in Geneva. From there, LiveU Matrix was used to distribute content over IP to rights holders in multiple countries.

Rights holders received live feeds via SRT, with Actua able to route content to individual takers through a single operation. Broadcasters and other media organisations across the UK and overseas used the feeds for linear television, OTT and social media distribution.

The cloud-based architecture also enabled Actua to combine LiveU Reliable Transport (LRT™) and SRT delivery, providing flexibility in how content was distributed.

LiveU Matrix additionally provided a contingency layer for the operation. With content routed through the cloud, Actua could maintain distribution to rights holders in the event of a disruption affecting its broadcast operations centre.

The wider host broadcast operation involved more than 650 staff and produced over 1,400 hours of content, including a 24/7 official Games Channel, a real-time Content Hub providing produced content worldwide and a daily 52-minute highlights programme.
