Brompton Technology Powers Major Virtual Production Facility

Brompton Technology's Tessera LED processing platform has been deployed at the newly opened Chengdu Film City VP Studio (CDFC VP Studio), a large-scale virtual production facility in Pidu District that represents one of the most ambitious virtual production environments in Asia.

The studio forms part of Chengdu Film City and features a 5,000-square-meter virtual production stage centred around an 820-square-meter LED volume. The setup includes a curved LED wall measuring 60 meters wide by 12 meters high and a motorized LED ceiling covering approximately 100 square meters, creating an immersive production environment designed for large-scale virtual production workflows.

Built using 3,240 AOTO RM2.3S series LED panels, the system provides a 360-degree visual environment with a 180-degree shooting angle and approximately 19.1 meters of usable shooting depth. An automated rotating turntable exceeding 1,100 square meters supports rapid production changes, while camera tracking is handled through RedSpy and WatcherX systems integrated with a real-time rendering workflow developed alongside Tencent Interactive Entertainment’s Content Ecosystem Division.

The LED volume is powered by 48 Brompton 4K Tessera SX40 LED processors and 96 Tessera XD 10G data distribution units, a configuration designed to support the technical demands of the large-scale installation.

Several features within the Tessera platform play critical roles within the workflow. ShutterSync technology is used to eliminate scan lines and phasing artifacts that can occur between digital cameras and LED displays, helping ensure clean in-camera imagery regardless of frame rates or shutter settings. Dynamic Calibration supports HDR performance by improving black levels and preserving highlight detail, while On-Screen Colour Adjustment (OSCA) enables panel-level brightness and color control across the extensive curved display surface.

The platform's 3D LUT capabilities also allow directors of photography and colorists to perform on-set color grading directly through the LED volume, further integrating production and post-production processes.

The facility reflects broader changes within production workflows as virtual production environments increasingly reduce the need for location travel and allow creative teams to view final composited imagery in real time during filming.

CDFC VP Studio officially opened on April 14, 2026 as part of the Chengdu Digital Intelligence Studio Complex during the 13th China Network Audio-Visual Conference. Located within Chengdu Film City, a 16.5-square-kilometer film and media hub in western China, the broader complex now supports more than 600 film, television and creative businesses.

The opening of the facility represents a significant expansion of virtual production capabilities in Asia and highlights the continued growth of large-scale LED-driven production environments across the global media industry.
