Brompton Technology And AOTO Power Virtual Production Studio
A new phase of the Yongchuan Virtual Production Studio in Chongqing is strengthening Western China's position in technology-driven filmmaking, with Brompton Technology and AOTO Electronics providing key infrastructure.
Developed by DAWA Studio, the expanded facility in Yongchuan District has been equipped with Brompton’s Tessera LED processing platform, integrated with AOTO’s RM1.9 LED display systems to support advanced virtual production workflows.
The site, located near a major transport hub, is designed to serve as a leading digital film and television production base in Western China. It has grown significantly since Phase I opened in 2023, with Phase II completed in 2025 adding five standard soundstages and expanding the campus to support multiple large-scale productions simultaneously.
At the core of the studio's virtual production setup is a 60-metre-wide curved LED wall, supported by additional movable screens to enable flexible on-set environments. The system is powered by 30 Tessera SX40 LED processors and 60 Tessera XD data distribution units, designed to ensure high-quality image capture without visual artefacts such as flicker or scan lines.
According to the studio’s production team, maintaining image integrity for camera capture was a key requirement in selecting the technology. Features such as synchronisation between LED refresh rates and camera shutters, as well as enhanced detail in low-light scenes, were highlighted as critical to production quality.
"On a stage like this, everything comes down to what the camera sees," explained Tiezheng Yang, Production Director at Dawa (Chongqing) Imaging Technology Co., Ltd. "We needed a processing platform that gives us confidence in clean on-camera capture, particularly when productions are pushing challenging shutter settings and lighting. Brompton Technology is the processor of choice for many of the world's leading virtual production stages, both domestically and internationally. This extensive, proven global adoption provides strong confidence and assurance in our technology decisions. Software features like ShutterSync, and the ability to preserve detail in darker areas, were key reasons for choosing Tessera LED processors."
The Tessera platform also supports advanced colour management, enabling compatibility with industry colour standards such as ACEScg, DCI-P3 and BT.2020, as well as real-time grading workflows. Additional features allow multiple cameras operating at different frame rates to capture from the same LED volume simultaneously.
Beyond virtual production, the facility incorporates XR, motion capture and real-time rendering technologies, supported by an on-site computing centre with 1,000 servers. The wider project has attracted significant investment and holds more than 200 patents and intellectual property rights.
The studio aims to significantly reduce production costs for complex genres such as science fiction and fantasy, while improving efficiency. Since opening, it has already hosted more than 50 film and television productions, reflecting the growing adoption of virtual production as a mainstream filmmaking tool.
