PBS Selects LTN

PBS has selected LTN as its IP video partner in a move aimed at modernising and future-proofing content distribution across its nationwide public television system, according to an announcement made Monday.

The multi-year agreement will support a large-scale transition from legacy distribution systems to a fully managed IP-based infrastructure serving more than 330 public television stations across the United States.

Under the agreement, LTN will deploy an end-to-end managed IP network that includes connectivity services, internet service provider capabilities, and two-way video transport across station locations and service sites.

"PBS is modernising and strengthening its Interconnection system to future-proof the platform and support the future of public media. Our IP network delivers the scale, reliability, and flexibility required to support that transformation. LTN is proud to provide the network, reliability, and operational foundation required to support one of the largest and most important media networks in the U.S."

The planned network infrastructure will support distribution of a broad range of public television programming, including PBS East and PBS West feeds, PBS KIDS, Create, NHK World, and FNX. The system is designed to provide member stations with the capability to receive up to nine linear feeds.

In addition to content distribution, the platform is expected to enable continuous content sharing among stations and strengthen contribution workflows for both regional and national distribution of locally produced programming.

LTN also said the network will support contribution workflows tied to streaming and digital distribution efforts, including over-the-top platforms and PBS digital properties such as pbs.org and PBS Digital.

The agreement reflects a broader shift within the media industry toward IP-based infrastructure as broadcasters seek greater scalability, flexibility, and operational efficiency in content delivery.
