TTD Bolsters Portable Power Fleet with Instagrid Battery Systems

News Image
The Technical Department (TTD) has officially integrated Instagrid's advanced portable battery systems and Link Max technology into its equipment fleet, providing a high-performance alternative to traditional generators.

Developed by former Bosch designers, these compact units utilize sophisticated software to deliver stable, grid-quality power from 144 internal battery cells. Capable of a full charge in just 2.5 hours, the Instagrid systems allow production crews to deploy reliable energy in remote locations or busy studios without the safety hazards and logistical delays associated with long cable runs.

Instagrid is widely regarded as one of the most advanced portable power packs available for professional use. Founded eight years ago by former Bosch senior product designers, the company set out to create a battery system capable of replicating grid-quality electricity in a fully portable format.

Unlike conventional battery systems, Instagrid's technology is controlled by highly sophisticated digital software, with more than 600,000 lines of code managing the performance of its 144 internal battery cells. This intelligent system allows the unit to deliver stable, grid-quality power while remaining compact, lightweight and fast-charging, reaching full charge in around two and a half hours.

For film and television productions, this means dependable power that can be deployed almost anywhere, whether that's a busy studio environment or in remote locations where access to mains electricity is limited or impractical.

Jerry Singleton, Managing Director at The Technical Department, said: "Productions increasingly need flexible, reliable power that can be deployed quickly and safely, and Instagrid gives our customers exactly that. Being able to provide clean, portable power without the need for generators or long cable runs opens up a huge amount of flexibility for lighting teams, camera crews and production departments. It's a simple plug-and-go system that removes a lot of the practical challenges crews face on set."

Instagrid systems are already widely used across the global film and media industry. The portable batteries have powered major location shoots, film premieres in London's Leicester Square and behind-the-scenes production at major studios including Sky Elstree. They have also supported high-profile international events including Formula E races and large-scale productions filmed in remote locations.

For The Technical Department's customers, the addition of Instagrid provides a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional power distribution. Jerry added: "Portable batteries remove the need for long trailing cables and reduce reliance on generators in many situations. This simplifies set-ups, improves health and safety by reducing trip hazards and allows equipment to be positioned exactly where it is needed."

Each Instagrid unit offers up to 2.1kWh of capacity and can power a wide range of typical production equipment, from lighting and camera systems to monitors, special effects and catering. Multiple units can be combined using Instagrid's Link Max system, allowing crews to create portable three-phase power in minutes.

Charlotte Evans, Instagrid's Senior Country Marketing Manager - UK, added: "In film and media production, reliability is everything. Equipment simply has to work. Our systems are designed to replicate grid power and deliver the stability professionals expect. Once productions experience how easy Instagrid units are to use and how much time and infrastructure it removes from a set-up, it quickly becomes part of the standard kit list."

The addition of Instagrid units to The Technical Department's inventory reflects the growing demand for mobile, efficient and environmentally conscious power solutions across film and television production.

Charlotte concluded: "We're delighted to have a company like TTD stock our kit. We're confident that by investing in the technology, TTD is ensuring its customers have access to one of the most advanced portable power solutions available, ready to deploy wherever the next production takes them."
