ITV Expands Love Island's Digital-First Strategy with Live Podcast Streaming
ITV has expanded the digital reach of Love Island by live streaming its official podcast for the first time, as part of a broader strategy to engage younger audiences during the launch of series 12.
Following celebrations marking the show's tenth anniversary last summer, the broadcaster worked with LiveU to enhance its digital-first approach for the latest series, which launched in the UK on 9 June. For the first time, Love Island: The Morning After podcast was streamed live on ITVX and YouTube, allowing fans to watch along in real time alongside the main launch episode on ITV2. Love Island is produced by Lifted Entertainment, part of ITV Studios, and GroupM Motion Entertainment.
To support the live stream, ITV's production team built a flexible cloud-based workflow capable of managing precise live on-air timings and real-time coordination with its playout provider. The workflow was enabled by the LiveU Studio cloud video platform, which connected the show's filming location in Majorca with the podcast studio in London.
As broadcasters increasingly look beyond linear viewing to reach audiences across digital and social platforms, Love Island continues to demonstrate how a strong online ecosystem can extend a programme's impact beyond its traditional broadcast. Leon Langdale, Technical Producer at ITV Studios, said: "Reaching younger audiences means meeting them where they are, and that increasingly means digital and social platforms. Since the show’s relaunch in 2015, viewing habits have undergone a dramatic shift. LiveU enables us to respond quickly and cost-effectively, supporting new formats that engage viewers on their terms."
For The Morning After podcast, the live setup relied on a seamless link between Majorca and London. A LiveU Video Return server in Majorca delivered a low-latency stream of the main programme to a LiveU LU800 unit in the London studio, allowing presenters Amy Hart and Indiyah Polack to watch the episode in real time. The London LU800 then transmitted the podcast feed to LiveU Studio, while a second LU800 in Majorca sent the main show feed to the same platform. Using LiveU Studio, a picture-in-picture output was created so viewers could watch the live podcast alongside the programme, giving the stream the look and feel of a fully branded Love Island broadcast.
ITV's relationship with LiveU spans more than a decade, with LiveU’s portable mobile encoders, including the LU800, widely used across the broadcaster’s newsgathering operations and disaster recovery strategy.
Langdale added: “Typically, the podcast is recorded after the main show and edited overnight for distribution. Going live required additional resilience, orchestration and technical coordination. Voxpod, our podcast production partner, were excellent, and LiveU Studio was central in managing the cloud workflow and ensuring delivery remained efficient and robust."
The expanded digital strategy culminated in an exclusive live teaser ahead of the series final, which aired on Monday 4 August. The 30-minute show, hosted by Hart and Polack, was streamed immediately before the main episode and featured live interviews and behind-the-scenes content from the villa. Langdale said: "They roamed the villa, capturing last-minute interviews, gossip and the build-up atmosphere. Produced by our Lifted Digital team, the workflow again used LiveU Studio to orchestrate multiple concurrent streams – TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube – ensuring the pre-final buzz reached fans across platforms."
Looking ahead, Langdale concluded: "LiveU Studio has given us a flexible entry point into cloud-based production, and we’re keen to expand its use. While we still rely on traditional kit for much of the workflow, there’s no reason we can’t evolve into cutting cameras, handling LRT feeds, and adding live graphics directly in the cloud. It’s an exciting direction of travel."
