Winchester Audio Barn Selects PMC BB5 XBD Monitors

Winchester Audio Barn has chosen PMC's flagship BB5 XBD reference loudspeakers as the main monitors for its newly built recording studio, designed from the ground up to offer a premium experience for artists and engineers.

Located in the Hampshire countryside, around 55 miles from London, Winchester Audio Barn is a purpose-built facility that combines cutting-edge technology with thoughtful design. Studio owner Niall Holden enlisted some of the UK’s leading recording experts to ensure the space met the highest standards. Bill Ward from Langdale Technical designed and installed the studio, Chris Walls of Level Acoustic Design handled the acoustics, and engineer, producer, musician, and educator Stuart Bruce contributed his technical expertise.

"Having the right team was always important, and thanks to their skill and knowledge, we have built something outstanding," explained Holden. "We wanted to make sure that we invested in the right quality of equipment to do the space justice, so PMC monitors were always the first choice."

The studio features a galleried main live room with perfect acoustics, three acoustically isolated booths, and a direct line of sight to the main control room, ensuring seamless communication between musicians and engineers. The control room is equipped with an SSL Duality Fuse console, Van Damme cabling, Neutrik connectors, and an array of vintage outboard gear, but pride of place is given to the BB5-XBD-A main monitors.

Boasting a 34mm high-frequency driver, 75mm mid-range dome driver, and two 15-inch radial bass units in twin Advanced Transmission Line (ATL) cabinets, the BB5-XBD-A delivers low-distortion sound and an accurate audio window for professional work.

"PMC are one of a very limited number of monitor brands that I would consider using," said Bruce. "I've always been impressed by the BB5-XBD-A. They're flat all the way down to 20 Hz and you get incredible detail from them."

The main monitors are complemented by a pair of PMC nearfield monitors, which provide a neutral and highly detailed listening experience, helping engineers hear the true sound of their mix.

Since opening, Winchester Audio Barn has quickly become a sought-after destination for artists and engineers. "This has really been a passion project built by a group of music lovers," concluded Holden. "We want this to be a place where people come to create their art.
