ITN Productions Launches Low-Latency IP Gallery

ITN Productions has unveiled a new low-latency IP gallery designed to support the delivery of daily news bulletins for a leading UK public broadcaster.

Serving two newsrooms, the newly constructed production control room (PCR) delivers increased flexibility and significantly reduced latency for live production teams.

Developed and integrated by Techex, the system brings together TAG’s Realtime Media Platform and Matrox ConvertIP decoders to provide fully configurable monitoring across ITN’s upgraded control environment. The IP-based deployment is intended to modernise ITN’s production workflows while supporting future standards and formats.

John Treadwell, Senior Strategic Account Manager - Global Accounts at Techex commented: "As long-time partners with TAG Video Systems, we were able to bring our experience to bear while designing this system using the TAG–Matrox Video integration. We worked closely with ITN to capture requirements, validate the design, and deliver the project. That collaboration will continue as we support ITN in evolving the system now that it's live."

TAG's software-defined platform provides unified probing, visualisation, monitoring, and analysis, with support for SMPTE ST 2110 and JPEG XS. ITN is using the technology to build scalability into the PCR and streamline operational oversight for live news broadcasting.

The installation reduces multi-viewer latency to between 1 and 1.5 frames, achieved through Matrox ConvertIP ST 2110–HDMI interfaces powering ten 4K multiviewer screens.

"Such low latency brings back the sense that the vision mixer is directly connected to your output — something that can get lost in IP-based systems," said James Wickes, Lead Media Engineer, ITN Productions. "Working with Techex has allowed us to leverage technology from TAG and Matrox Video easily in a way which brings finesse and future-proofing to the gallery and productions."

The Matrox ConvertIP units deliver frame-accurate synchronisation across all displays, helping recreate the responsiveness operators expect in fast-paced news environments.

Daniel Maloney, Technical Marketing Manager at Matrox Video, added: "The Matrox ConvertIP family was designed exactly for projects like this. Seeing ITN achieve such low-latency multiviewer performance across multiple 4K displays is a great demonstration of how tight partnerships can bring immediacy and confidence back into IP-based control rooms."

The system also enables rapid adaptation of monitoring layouts through TAG's Operator Console, giving production teams control over screen configuration during live output.

"ITN's new gallery is a great example of how IP-native monitoring can reach full broadcast responsiveness," explained TAG's Chief Architect Paul Briscoe. "In a newsroom environment, the immediacy of information delivery, while retaining the flexibility of a software-defined system, is hugely validating. It demonstrates that an advanced, all-IP control room can meet the real-time demands that live production requires. Techex's approach brought together the strengths of TAG and Matrox Video in a way that allowed ITN to focus purely on production rather than infrastructure."

The launch marks another step in the industry shift toward fully IP-based broadcast environments, with ITN positioning the new gallery as a foundation for future technology expansion.
