Sydney Retro Venue Reborn As The Bristol After Major Multi-Concept Overhaul

A landmark 80s-themed venue in Sydney's CBD has reopened as The Bristol following an extensive transformation that has turned the former Bristol Arms Hotel into a five-level, multi-concept hospitality destination.

The venue, owned and operated by the expanding leisure hospitality company Oscars Group, had been closed for four years before undergoing its full-scale makeover. Now trading across five individually themed storeys, The Bristol features restaurants, bars, a nightclub, rooftop spaces and dedicated event areas.

At the heart of the redesign is the Calypso nightclub — a space that retains the venue's nightlife heritage. With a ceiling lined with 300 mirrorballs, the club has been equipped with Martin Audio's CDD coaxial differential dispersion series. More than 60 CDD loudspeakers, mounted in dedicated yoke assemblies, have been installed throughout The Bristol to ensure wide, even audio coverage across all zones.

The sound system was delivered by Martin Audio's Australian distributor, Total Audio Group (TAG), under the guidance of technical director Anthony Russo, working in partnership with system integrators Pro Sound and Lighting (Wollongong). The installation followed a direct request from the client, who had previously used Martin Audio systems in other venues.

In Calypso, the CDD system creates a sophisticated New York-inspired club atmosphere, enhanced by soft furnishings and carpet extending across the dancefloor. The main room features six CDD15 loudspeakers positioned in an immersive layout around the floor, supported by SX118 subwoofers beneath the DJ booth and additional units for delay reinforcement.

"CDD's wide dispersion really lent itself to the low ceiling, and its throw onto the dancefloor," continues Russo. "Being coaxial it is a true point source, whether on or off axis, with great time alignment." Booth seating zones are each served by CDD10s, while a separate annexe equipped with CDD10 and SX212 subwoofers can operate independently or as an extension of the main room.

The revitalised venue has already drawn high-profile attention, including a DJ set by Groove Armada in the Calypso lounge.

Other spaces include the open-air Rooftop, home to popular Sunday sessions overlooking the harbour, where weatherised CDD10-WRs deliver the soundtrack. The Bristol Sports Bar features the robust performance of CDD speakers alongside an 11-metre screen, while the ground floor hosts Ela Ela, a Greek restaurant, and the Midtown Bar & Lounge, a piano and cocktail bar.
