S4C And TG4 Collaborate on New Game Show 'Y Deis'
S4C's new game show, Y Deis, is set to begin filming at Enfys Studios in Cardiff, bringing a mix of knowledge, skill, strategy, and a little Celtic luck, to Welsh screens.
In a landmark collaboration, the Irish public service broadcaster TG4 has acquired the rights to the format, marking a significant moment in cross-Celtic media partnership.
The Welsh-language version will be filmed first, followed closely by an Irish-language edition titled An Deis, also shot at the Cardiff studios. An English-language version is planned for international audiences. During production, Welsh multi-camera director Geraint Rhys Lewis will be shadowed by an Irish-language director, gaining experience in multi-camera studio direction.
At the heart of Y Deis are three teams of two, competing across rounds to build their prize pot through quick thinking and strategy. The final team faces a high-stakes, timed quiz to claim the Jackpot. A signature element of the show is the dice machine, or “deis,” which adds theatrical flair and shapes gameplay—but correct answers remain essential for victory.
The show will be presented by James Williams, BBC Radio Wales breakfast host, marking his S4C entertainment debut. The Irish version, produced by Tyrone Productions—the team behind Ireland’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire—will be hosted by journalist and presenter Eibhlín Ní Chonghaile, bringing energy and excitement across the Celtic nations.
Gavin Cox of Slam Media, the show's creative lead, said the concept was inspired by his late father’s career as a fruit machine game designer, fitting for a quiz that blends chance and knowledge.
Two special Christmas episodes will feature some of S4C’s most familiar faces competing against each other.
Y Deis is produced with support from Media Cymru and the Welsh Government via Creative Wales, highlighting the strength of creative collaboration between the two Celtic broadcasters.
