Arvato Systems Celebrates Completion Of 'Gaia-X 4 Roms' Research Project

In mid-November, the final event of the 'GAIA-X 4 ROMS' research project took place in a festive setting on the historic grounds of the Museum of Industrial Culture in Osnabrück and on the premises of the Hamburger Hochbahn in Hamburg.

As consortium leader of the project, in which a total of 17 partners from research and industry have been involved since the end of 2021, Arvato Systems had taken on the conception, development and implementation tasks for a new type of mobility platform. The focus was on the first and last mile in urban areas using so-called autonomous-navigating parcel stations.

"The final results of 'GAIA-X 4 ROMS' show once again how revolutionary technologies and collaborative research can change the mobility and logistics industry in the long term," said Bernd Jaschinski-Schürmann, Head of Digital Supply Chain Management & Platform Business at Arvato Systems. "Now the focus is on identifying further utilization opportunities, transferring the developed approaches into practice and further expanding the knowledge gained."

"The project partners have proven that GAIA-X, as a European data infrastructure, plays a central role in the development of efficient and forward-looking interconnected solutions. The project has generated important solution modules for the mobility of the future through both the participating companies and the research institutions," added André Haff, overall coordinator for the GAIA-X 4 ROMS project at Arvato Systems.

In the outdoor area of the Museum of Industrial Culture in Osnabrück, experts from Arvato Systems, together with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the company Krone and the Technical University of Dortmund, presented an autonomous parcel station that will help to make the first and last mile of parcel delivery more efficient and sustainable in the future. By connecting such autonomously navigating parcel stations to a mobile application developed by Arvato Systems, senders and recipients of shipments can interact with the intelligent vehicles and, for example, define the optimal time and place for parcel delivery. A booking platform orchestrates the incoming shipping orders and allocates them to the transport processes in an optimised manner. The overarching control processes are also managed in corresponding web applications developed by Arvato Systems (so-called cockpits) developed by Arvato Systems for fleet and order management.

In addition to the presentation of the autonomously navigating parcel station in Osnabrück, autonomous mobility solutions for local public transport were also presented at the closing event as further results from the 'GAIA-X 4 ROMS' project in Hamburg.
