Murraypro Announce New SPDIF+TOS~AES Converter

News Image
Often Audiophiles need to convert signals from equipment offering only an SPDIF or a TOS optical output to the Professional AES3 format, and have experienced difficulty finding a converter, or indeed any unit, suitable for this purpose.

Murraypro's earlier model has now been replaced by their handy little Cat 540 "SPDIF+TOS~AES" unit, which has been completely redesigned to incorporate a number of valuable enhancements.

Elegantly, our 'adjustment free' module accepts serial digital audio streams between 44.1KHz and 192KHz word clock frequency, automatically selecting between SPDIF or TOS inputs, however 'dual port' operation is not supported. The converter does NOT modify the format of the input data stream, so that "what goes in, comes out". Both TOS and SPDIF inputs are accurately matched, with additional EMC protection provided for the high sensitivity SPDIF input. The module provides ac coupled transformer isolation of the AES OP with both level and impedance conversion, to ensure that downstream equipment is correctly driven.

Users will be aware that even with the basic 48KHz word clock the actual digital audio data stream is hundreds of times higher, and with 192KHz operation such high pulse frequencies do not travel easily over any distance on audio cable! The AES balanced serial output benefits from trapezoidal pulse shaping which controls pulse rise times and significantly reduces ringing on the output line.

Of course, use of unsuitable cables in an installation exacerbate difficulties of this type, so Murraypro recommend an initial on-site trial evaluation using rather longer cables than actually required which are then, after establishing 100% functionality, trimmed to the shorter length needed.

Operating from low voltage, the converter module draws very modest power and 'Looping' connectors are furnished on the modules so up to 20 could be operated from a single PSU. This is ideal when several units are to be operated in close proximity, and may often save the need for multiple mains outlets.

Sometimes, when working 'mobile' for example, mains availability can be severely restricted but a battery powered laptop is available. Murraypro offer a special USB lead that is a major asset under these circumstances, as it extracts low voltage power from the PC to operate the SPDIF converter. When ordering the Cat 540 Converter, customers specify the power arrangement required.

The converter is supplied in an extremely strong, but modestly dimensioned stainless steel case only 6.5W x 7D x 4H cm, which weighs in at under 200g. With its plastic feet, it may be used free standing on a shelf or, for mobile use, be securely clamped using the tapped holes in the base.
