               CRA conference venue announced
The Creators’ Rights Alliance (CRA), which represents creative talent in the media industry, will hold their annual conference at the National Film Theatre in London's South Bank on March 21 from 11am–5pm. Registration will be held from 10.30am onwards.
The CRA are an alliance of organisations representing copyright creators and content providers throughout the media, particularly television, radio and the press. These include the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies (BAPLA) Chartered Institute of Journalists and the Directors Guild of Great Britain.
The CRA’s high-profile conference on 21 March 2002 will bring together writers, film directors, musicians, intellectual property lawyers, media unions and employment rights specialists from Britain, the US and Europe. The keynote speech will be given by Minister for Tourism, Film and Broadcasting Dr Kim Howells.
With the advent of the European Copyright Directive due to be incorporated into UK Law, the conference organisers also hope that the conference will help codify a comprehensive response from its members.
Headlining the morning session, in his first appearance in the UK since his groundbreaking legal victory against 'New York Times et al', is Jonathan Tasini. It was Mr Tasini's case in the Supreme Court that changed the working landscape for freelance workers and media companies that archive their work.
At the conference, the CRA will launch their strategic response to what it sees as "abuses" of freelance creators in the UK entitled - 'Between a Rock and a Hard Place: The Problems Facing Freelance Creators in the UK Media Market-place'.
The document also proposes key changes in legislation which will help protect an environment in which creativity can thrive.
