Earthly Role For Projectiondesign In Feature Film

A cineo30 1080 DLP eCinema projector from Norway's projectiondesign has been used on the quality control in the post production process for the ground-breaking feature film 'Earth', which will be launched on Blu-ray Disc on 17 March 2008 and was released in cinemas spanning 12 territories last November.
Co-produced by BBC Worldwide and Greenlight Media, Earth took five years to shoot and a further year and a half in post-production. Earth is an epic portrait of the diversity of life on our planet, and of the threat posed to it by human activity. The movie cost $15m (USD) to make and has been screened in 4K in digital cinemas via a distribution partnership with Arts Alliance Digital.
The whole post production process was supervised by Jon Thompson of The Worx. "One of the things that made Earth so challenging was that the source footage was shot on so many different formats, including HD cam, Varican, DigiBeta, HDV, Super 16mm, 35mm, HD D5 and data," commented Thompson. "The cineo30 1080 projector from projectiondesign was perfect because it is compact enough to be used in a small post-production room, while still using the P3 colour space which is larger than that of HD."
For the QC, Thompson integrated the cineo30 1080 with Nucoda Film master X17 and Filmlight Baselight 8 grading packages. Editing was performed at Unit using MacPro, Final Cut Pro HD, Flame/Inferno, Adobe After Effects and a Render Farm. In all, three different versions of Earth had to be made: one for cinema film, one for digital cinema, and a third for HD Blu Ray. The last of these is due to be launched later this month courtesy of Lionsgate Films.
Commenting on projectiondesign's involvement with the making of Earth, Anders Løkke, Marketing & Communications Manager, said: "Movie-goers are becoming ever more sensitive to the image quality of the films they are paying to go and see, so QC and grading are becoming more and more critical. It’s a great tribute to the quality and consistency of our cineo30 1080 projector design that it can be used with total confidence on a movie project such as this, which uses such a diverse range of source material and is being produced for viewing in a number of different formats."
