Bournemouth University In Sony HD Media Studio First

Sony recently announced that it has been awarded a deal to supply Bournemouth University with a cutting-edge HD television studio.
Bournemouth will be the first UK-based Media School to open an HD facility, using the latest equipment for High Definition video production and a managed post-production environment.
Sony’s bespoke design, featuring HDC-1500 cameras, MVS-8000 switcher, LMD Monitors and HDXchange, will allow Bournemouth’s students to gain practical experience from October this year with the latest equipment the industry has to offer.
Mark Grinyer, Sony Professional Solutions Europe, said: “We are very pleased to be working on this exciting project to enable Bournemouth to retain its position as one of the UK’s leading video production training facilities. The HD studio will equip students with the skills they need to be become the producers of tomorrow and learn first hand with the latest leading HD equipment the industry has to offer.”
Bournemouth has purchased Sony HDC-1500 portable cameras that offer advanced HD Digital Signal Processing that will enable students to capture high quality images on the move. The cameras incorporate a newly developed CCD imager that creates images in either 1080 50 or 60 frame progressive or 1080 50 or 60 field interlace frame rates, depending on desired final system output. The new studio will be fully operational for the start of the new academic year and follows a multi-million-pound refurbishment of the University’s Media School.
“This is a major investment for Bournemouth University and underscores our commitment to ensuring that students work with the very latest industry standard equipment,” said Stephen Jukes, Dean of the Media School. “Sony has a strong track record of delivering innovative and tailored production systems for the professional broadcast industry and we feel they are the ideal partner to build an HD studio so that our graduates can hit the ground running when they start their working career."
Sony’s professional, flat-panel LMD video monitors will offer students a choice of critical content-management devices for reviewing footage, previewing materials or editing video. The media management device Sony will implement is HDXchange, a scalable solution that can be easily integrated into existing networks for a rapid, centralised and collaborative workflow. It will enable students to produce content more quickly and easily than ever before for a wide range of playout platforms - from conventional broadcast, tape and DVD to web, IPTV and mobile devices.
At the heart of HDXchange is a high-performance server optimised to support several students accessing High Definition media content simultaneously. This server allows multiple students to browse, search, edit and manage content that’s stored natively in the same MPEG Long GOP HD file format.
