BBC TO LAUNCH NEW 'TOTP' AWARDS
THE BBC are to launch the first annual Top of the Pops Awards ceremony next year.
BBC Manchester’s Head of Entertainment, Wayne Garvie said: “There’s no bigger name in the world of music television than Top of the Pops and there’ll be no bigger party than the Top of the Pops awards. This is a chance for the whole nation to take part and celebrate the very best in popular music. Under-pining this refreshing show is the might of Top of the Pops Magazine, the nation’s biggest title, and the international reputation of Top of the Pops.”
After leaving their traditional studio format earlier this year to stage a huge stadium gig at the Sheffield Arena they will be returning to Manchester for the Top of the Pops awards.
Since starting from a former church in 1964, the programme now broadcasts to 88 countries worldwide.
The awards ceremony is set to be a celebration of the very best in must-listen music. Throughout 2001 the BBC’s viewers, listeners, web-surfers and readers will be invited to vote for their favourites in what will be the people’s choice. The awards will be broadcast on BBC One.
