Broadcast Electronics Unveils MTX Compact FM Transmitter

News Image
Broadcast Electronics (BE) is set to introduce its new MTX Compact series of FM transmitters at the 2026 NAB Show New York, taking place on 21–22 October at the Javits Centre in New York City.

The new platform is designed to provide broadcasters with an energy-efficient, space-saving transmission solution, combining high-performance FM transmission with integrated audio processing, content management and monitoring capabilities. Broadcast Electronics will exhibit at Booth 456.

The MTX series builds on the company's established STX transmitter platform, retaining its direct-to-channel digital exciter technology and support for upgrades to HD Radio and DRM+, while introducing a new hardware platform and expanded software functionality.

Available at power levels of up to 1kW, the transmitters use the latest LDMOS radio-frequency devices and high-efficiency switching power supplies to improve power density and reduce energy consumption.

The compact design occupies just 2RU of rack space, while its lightweight construction allows units to be shipped using standard parcel services such as UPS and FedEx. The approach is intended to reduce transport and installation costs, particularly for broadcasters operating in space-constrained transmission facilities.

Integrated content management and audio processing
A key feature of the MTX platform is Content Gateway, an integrated system for managing, processing, transporting and monitoring audio at transmitter sites.

By combining hardware and software within the transmitter, Content Gateway is designed to reduce the need for external equipment, helping broadcasters lower capital costs and free up valuable rack space in multi-use transmission facilities.

The system can also be expanded as operational requirements change, providing a flexible approach to managing audio infrastructure across broadcast networks.

Initial Content Gateway options include Stereo Tool audio processing software, which offers features such as Perfect Declipper, Delossifier, Advanced Dynamics and a composite clipper. These tools are designed to enhance audio quality and loudness, including in highly competitive radio markets.

The MTX series incorporates a new HTML5-based graphical user interface, providing responsive access to transmitter controls and monitoring tools across different devices. The interface includes multi-level security features designed to meet new US Federal Communications Commission requirements, alongside support for the SNMPv3 network management protocol.

Broadcasters can also opt for MicroMPX technology, which provides a way to transport FM multiplex signals over standard IP networks. The system supports error correction and redundant transmission across multiple networks, with a backup audio player available in the event of a complete loss of connectivity.

Optional GPS synchronisation and single-frequency network (SFN) software enable the platform to support SFN deployments and on-channel boosters, helping broadcasters extend coverage while maintaining synchronisation between transmission sites.

Broadcast Electronics has also partnered with Inovonics to integrate FM and HD Radio off-air reception capabilities into the MTX Content Gateway.

The optional MTX Tuner Module uses Inovonics' software-defined radio-based tuner technology to support translator feeds and confidence monitoring. Features include audio streaming for multiple remote listeners, detailed reception metering, configurable alarms and multi-level password protection.

Engineers can access monitoring information through web-enabled devices, including PCs, tablets and smartphones, allowing them to check off-air reception remotely.

The module is intended to provide broadcasters with a cost-effective option for audio inputs to translators, as well as an additional monitoring capability for MTX installations.

With the launch of the MTX Compact series, Broadcast Electronics is bringing together transmission, audio processing and monitoring functions in a single platform aimed at reducing equipment requirements, simplifying installation and improving operational efficiency for radio broadcasters.
