Sonuscore Launches The Sculpture

Sonuscore has introduced The Sculpture, a new instrument created entirely from recordings of a single hand-built metal sound sculpture, offering composers and sound designers a distinctive collection of organic metallic textures.

The instrument is built from one physical object, with every sound captured from the sculpture itself across four microphone positions. Sonuscore has transformed the recordings into two playable instruments designed to provide a range of performance and sound design possibilities.

The company said there are only around 10 of these sculptures in existence worldwide. Each one is individually handcrafted, meaning no two are identical, and the objects are not commercially available.

For The Sculpture, Sonuscore recorded the full structure, including the large upper and lower plates, which produce a heavy, almost synthesiser-like resonance when struck, and the connecting rods, which reveal detailed granular characteristics when bowed.

The resulting instrument captures a range of articulations, from sustained vocal-like tones created by bowing the rods, to impactful strikes on the plates and textured performances created with mallets. Sonuscore said every sound originates from the original object rather than being layered from multiple sources.

The Sculpture includes four microphone perspectives: close, far, contact and an internal Blumlein pair positioned inside the structure to capture its internal resonance. The approach allows users to move between focused, intimate sounds and wider ambient textures, including the experience of hearing the metal resonate from within.

The instrument is supplied as two separate playable tools. The Single instrument provides direct access to the original recordings across all four microphone positions, aimed at composers and sound designers seeking the character of the raw sculpture.

The second instrument, Engine, uses five voices built from the same source material, including two freely playable voices, two arpeggiators and one granular engine. It also includes slot and master effects for creating evolving sound design.

Sonuscore said The Sculpture is aimed at a specific group of creative professionals rather than being a general-purpose instrument. The company highlighted film composers, game composers and sound designers as key users, particularly those looking for unusual organic textures.

The instrument’s resonant and colder tonal character is suited to contemporary film and television scoring, atmospheric game environments, horror and tension projects, and sound design work focused on metallic, textural and granular sounds.
