Techtel Installs Haivision Live Streaming At TAFE NSW St Leonards
Techtel has delivered and integrated a Haivision live streaming system at TAFE NSW's St Leonards campus, enabling screen and media, broadcasting and live production students to capture and contribute live video from the field straight into the college's television studios.
Designed to emulate modern broadcast operations, the setup uses a portable backpack transmitter that connects directly to cameras. The unit leverages bonded 4G and 5G services across multiple mobile networks to maintain a resilient live link back to the studio.
"This solution gives students the opportunity to experience the realities of live broadcasting, both in the studio and out in the field," said Matt Feeney, Director of Projects at Techtel. "By combining portable bonded cellular transmission with studio integration and return communications, the system reflects the workflows used by professional broadcasters and live production teams today."
At the core of the deployment is a Haivision StreamHub receiver, integrated with TAFE NSW's existing studio infrastructure. It accommodates up to eight simultaneous live streams and offers multiple SDI and NDI outputs, allowing feeds to be routed seamlessly into production.
The platform also provides return video and two-way talkback, so studio directors can communicate with field camera operators and send live programme feeds back to them, mirroring professional electronic newsgathering practices.
For added flexibility, students can contribute live video using the Haivision MoJoPro mobile app, enabling quick-turn smartphone streaming for field reporting and mobile content creation.
Techtel managed supply, installation and commissioning, and trained teaching staff so the technology can be fully embedded within media production courses. Lutfi Hady, Head Teacher of Film, Television and Live Production at TAFE NSW St Leonards, said the system will help ready students for roles across broadcast and media.
"Providing students with access to industry-relevant technology is essential for building practical skills and confidence," Lutfi said. "This additional live streaming capability allows our students to produce and deliver live content from the field while working directly with our studio facilities — mirroring the workflows used by professional media organisations. Industry-aligned training ensures our students are equipped with the practical experience needed for careers in broadcast, live production and digital media."
By enabling live contribution from almost anywhere and integrating it directly into studio workflows, the Haivision system opens up hands-on learning in live news gathering, multi-location production and real-time storytelling.
