AEQ Forum Split Digitises Highland Hospital Radio Broadcasts

Highland Hospital Radio, a volunteer-led station based at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, Scotland, broadcasts seven days a week and offers a personalised service for patients through music requests and dedications.

Established in 1970, the station received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2012.

The station, a long-standing UK institution, originally aired as Radio Inverness in 1970. Marking its 50th anniversary in 2021, it launched a streaming service. It now operates 24/7, producing more than 25 hours of original programming each week, with a musical focus largely on traditional Scottish genres.

As part of a recent technical refresh, the station has installed the AEQ FORUM SPLIT digital console in its main on-air studio, selected for its ease of operation, reliability and high audio quality. The model, within the AEQ FORUM IP range, is designed specifically for broadcast control in live environments.

The console includes broadcast-critical functions such as automatic monitor muting, a cough button, fader start, signal routing control, tools for automating external equipment, and integrated communication and intercom capabilities.

With a modular design and compact footprint, AEQ FORUM SPLIT fits a wide array of settings, from self-op or presenter-operated studios to television production control rooms, audio production facilities and mixed configurations in larger installations.

Combining straightforward operation with advanced management, it supports both basic tasks and complex workflows. The FORUM IP SPLIT integrates the FR CORE modular engine into three rack units and can be configured with up to six quad-fader modules alongside a control and monitoring unit.

Optional multi-channel AoIP input/output cards support the AES67 standard via Dante, enabling interoperability with other IP audio systems and the exchange of signals with consoles, routers and end devices from more than 300 manufacturers.

The desk also offers MADI connectivity and supports the integration of up to two internal digital telephone hybrids, expanding communication and production options.

The project was delivered in partnership with Broadcast Radio, a broadcast solutions specialist, which managed system integration and technical implementation to ensure a smooth transition tailored to the station’s requirements.
