GOVERNMENT COMMITMENT TO DIGITAL SWITCHOVER

BROADCASTING Minister Dr Kim Howells has reaffirmed the Governments Policy on digital switchover.
He said: "The Government are committed to seeing the benefits of digital TV brought to British viewers as soon as possible. In a very short time three in ten households have plugged into digital TV and thousands more are about to do the same thing. We have said all along that there are technological hurdles to cross – it's not surprising when we are breaking new ground in this new technology. We will continue to work with the industry to promote digital TV.
"The switch to digital places us at the forefront of high quality communications. It is vital that we sustain this momentum if we are to exploit the huge new markets opening up and bring the opportunity for greater choice and the benefits of Internet access to many more people." (CD)
