Consortium Demonstrates 5G Broadcast Mobile TV At SET Expo 2025

A consortium led by Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., Motorola and Rohde & Schwarz has successfully demonstrated a real-world proof of concept for 5G Broadcast at SET Expo 2025, showing how television services and new revenue-generating applications can be delivered directly to mobile devices.

The live demonstration used duplex gap broadcasting to provide wide-area, high-quality coverage without causing interference to existing 5G mobile networks or digital television services. The trial comes as Brazil prepares to transition to a new TV 3.0 digital ecosystem, following a presidential announcement earlier this summer.

Brazil's move towards TV 3.0 is supported by Article 4 of the Brazilian Presidential Decree, which enables the use of complementary technologies to support mobile broadcasting. 5G Broadcast is one such technology, allowing television signals to be received directly on compatible smartphones without relying on traditional mobile data connections.

For the demonstration, Rohde & Schwarz deployed an R&S®TLU9 transmitter connected to an EFTX antenna at the transmission complex on Paulista Avenue in São Paulo. The project was implemented by local specialist LM Telecomunicações, with Qualcomm Technologies supplying test devices and technical expertise. The 5G Broadcast signal was successfully received on Motorola Razr 50 and Moto Edge Plus smartphones.

The broadcast proved reliable inside the SET Expo venue at the Centro de Convenções, around 5 km from the transmitter, as well as along the busy streets between the two locations. Notably, the system operated continuously for a month with no reported interference to existing mobile or broadcast services.

"This demonstration confirms that 5G Broadcast is a viable solution for delivering mobile television and a range of value-added services without impacting existing services," said Thiago Nakagawa, Head of Rohde & Schwarz Broadcast in Brazil.

"Qualcomm Technologies is proud to collaborate with industry leaders like Rohde & Schwarz and Motorola on this successful 5G Broadcast demonstration," said Lorenzo Casaccia, Vice President, Technical Standards at QUALCOMM Europe, Inc. "This showcases the potential of 5G Broadcast to deliver a rich and engaging mobile experience to consumers in Brazil."

"Motorola is committed to innovation in mobile technology, and 5G Broadcast represents a significant step forward," said Martin Errante, LATAM Portfolio Director at Motorola. "In collaboration with Qualcomm and Rohde & Schwarz, Motorola reaffirms its leadership in innovation by conducting tests with specially prepared equipment to validate the technology, highlighting our commitment to delivering cutting-edge connectivity experiences for the future."
