BBC Awarded Contract To Produce Casualty
BBC Studios has secured the contract to produce Casualty, the long-running and award-winning continuing drama, following a competitive tender process.
The BBC Studios bid scored highest against the published criteria.
The move presents an opportunity to significantly increase Welsh portrayal in the series, with Casualty set in Cardiff while continuing to be filmed in the city. The transition is expected to strengthen the programme’s role within the Welsh production sector and reflects the BBC’s commitment to supporting homegrown storytelling.
Casualty was put out to tender in May 2025 as part of the BBC's contestability requirements, which aim to ensure the best programmes are commissioned for audiences, regardless of the producer. The new contract covers three series, with filming scheduled to begin in Spring 2026.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, said: "Casualty is a hugely important, much loved BBC drama and this tender has ensured it will continue to flourish. It was an extremely competitive process and we would like to thank the shortlisted producers for their high quality and comprehensive proposals. We look forward to working with BBC Studios as we build on the show’s long-running success."
Nick Andrews, Head of Commissioning, BBC Cymru Wales, said: "Casualty will be supercharging the portrayal of Wales to the UK and beyond and BBC Cymru Wales are delighted. Casualty always breaks new ground, and it has done so again. The sheer scale of the portrayal of Wales – in character and place is a game changer. BBC Studios fired our imaginations, and we look forward to where they take the world of Casualty next."
